With a Chilean born father and a German mother, Helene grew up in Brazil, Liberia and Germany. She has spent most of her adult life in New York and Berlin. Following the family tradition of traveling and living in far away, exotic places, she has taken journeys to over 75 countries. Her longest trip was sailing on a cruise ship four times around Cape Horn in the capacity of two stripe officer, Her family's surviving documents, photos and heirlooms in addition to her own travel mementos feature prominently in her writing.
As a writer Helene started out publishing handbooks but soon honed her creative writing skills at Grub Street in Boston and at Stony Brooks University in Southampton. She joined several writers groups. Ten years ago she started writing short stories in English and German which are being published in magazines and anthologies. Currently she is working on her first book of creative non-fiction.
